1. “Raising Tobacco Taxes” is the motto for this year’s World No Tobacco Day, sponsored by the World Health Organization. The Seventh-day Adventist Church along with other groups will recognize May 31, encouraging governments to adopt a policy to increase tobacco taxes as a method of discouraging smoking.
2. On May 18, delegates to the Northern California Conference of Seventh-day Adventists at its quadrennial constituency session declined to vote on three statements that would modify church positions on homosexuality, evolution, and women as church pastors. They did re-elect conference President Jim Pedersen, Executive Secretary Marc Woodson, and Treasurer John Rasmussen.
3. Despite having a lightning rod on its roof, the South Hampton SDA church in Bermuda had its steeple heavily damaged during by a lightning strike. Pastor Dr. Sydney Gibbons told the Bermuda Sun: “We want the church to be on fire but not like this!”
