“Home Funerals + Green Burials: Bringing Death Back to Life”

Home funerals and green burials sound like new ways of approaching death but they are in fact ancient. More and more people are choosing home funerals and green burials as a way of reclaiming natural death rites. For years, we've handed over our death care to the medical and funeral industries and in doing so, have lost our connection to death. Home funerals and green burials bring death back into our lives in a way that empowers communities, provides space for healing, and deepens our connection to nature.

Speaker Biography:

Cassie Barrett works as a green cemetery operator at Carolina Memorial Sanctuary, a conservation and green cemetery, where she has been since 2016. There she assists families with burials, runs business operations, and occasionally even digs graves. She also has a passion project, Center for Conscious Living & Dying, a collaboration with hospice doctor Aditi Sethi, which focuses on providing end-of-life guidance to the community. Death work is a deep calling for her and there’s nothing else she’d rather be doing. Her biggest mission is to encourage and empower people to prepare for their own death and live a fuller life.
