Asheville Forum: Carmen Lau

Asheville Adventist Forum Meeting

September 28, 2019 at 2:30 p.m.

Speaker:

Carmen Lau, Chair of the Adventist Forum Board.

Presentation:

“Warnings from Rwandan Churches: Political Identity Encourages Imitation, Extinguishes Imagination, and Destroys Sanctuary”

Carmen will draw on her recently researched and completed MA thesis, which collected stories from Seventh-day Adventists who were in Rwanda during the genocide that shocked the world in 1994. The goal of the study was to record some memories that could give insight into the guiding narratives that were in place in churches as violence began and to document the varied realities that people experienced. Reflecting on genocide shows a glimpse of what happened at a given time and can allow one to gain insight into one’s self and one’s context. Such reflection can be an important step in nurturing peace.
