The Adventist Church Makes a Statement Regarding Angus Jones

Early Tuesday morning, the Seventh-day Adventist Church in North America sent out the following statement to its regional leadership:

Angus T. Jones, of the CBS sitcom Two and a Half Men, was recently baptized at a Seventh-day Adventist Church in the San Fernando Valley area. On October 8, Jones was interviewed on a show called Turning Point, produced by the Seventh-day Adventist Church, in which he discusses his faith journey. Although the show will air on Hope Channel (DirecTV channel 368) this Friday, November 30, at 8:00 p.m. ET, you can view an online version at http://www.theadventistchannel.com/watch/Turning_Point:_Angus_T._Jones/specials

Some of the media entities have just been wanting to confirm that Angus is actually a baptized member. Other tabloid-related entities have been trying to peg the Church with helping Angus to make these statements about the show. We’ve been very careful in how we answer the questions. This situation is not only delicate because of the reputation of the Church and how the media will portray us – it is delicate because Angus is a new member and we don’t want him to perceive his church as a religious organization that could be capitalizing on his celebrity status and new found spirituality.

We’ve reached out to Angus as well as to the people who have been giving him Bible studies letting both know that we are here to help.

Please stay tuned as we continue to work with this situation.

This is a good start. In case anyone is under the impression that the church should not get involved in this story, check out how the British tabloid, Daily Mail has equated Adventism with the conspiracy theory-peddeling guy who interviewed Angus Jones: “Jay-Z is a devil-worshiping Freemason and Obama is like Hitler’: Bizarre beliefs of  spiritual guide who inspired Two and A Half Men star Angus T Jones before his religious rant.” The paper, which has been driving the story in the U.S. media, has also published private details about an Adventist couple connected to the TV star.
