Campus News Headlines: Walla Walla University Inaugurates Center for Study of Race, Ethnicity and Culture (and More!)

Walla Walla University Inaugurates New Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity and Culture. Walla Walla University’s has named its new center for race, ethnicity and culture in honor of Donald Blake, a member of the faculty in the Walla Walla College Department of Biological Sciences from 1962 to 1969. The Center, officially named on April 24, signifies an act of apology for Blake’s mistreatment at Walla Walla in the 1960s. “When Blake accepted the position at WWC, he was one of the first black tenure track faculty to be hired at a predominately white Seventh-day Adventist college or university,” officials said. Union College Professor’s Bedbug Research Garners Media Coverage. Union College professor Dr. Corraine McNeill has received media coverage for her published research that demonstrates bedbugs have a preference for dark-colored sheets. McNeill joined the Union College faculty in 2012 to teach biology, shortly after finishing her research and completing her doctoral studies on bedbugs. Her research, published in the Journal of Medical Entomology, has grabbed headlines in Newsweek, Discovery News, Science Daily and in other publications. Read more here.

Southern Adventist University Launches $50 Million Campaign. Southern Adventist University launched the $50 million Campaign for Excellence in Faith and Learning at an event honoring outgoing university president Gordon Bietz. The Bietz Legacy Event included groundbreaking on a new student life center, and the legacy fund will go toward continuing campus improvements and increased grants for scholarships. Read more here.

Oakwood University Receives UNCF Career Pathways Grant. Oakwood University has been selected as one of 30 colleges to receive the highly competitive United Negro College Fund (UNCF) Career Pathways Grant. The grant is designed to improve job placement outcomes for graduates of four-year historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and predominantly black institutions (PBIs). The planning grant totals $2.55 million. Oakwood enrolls 1,733 students, making it a Tier II institution on the distribution scale. As such, Oakwood will receive a grant of $100,000. Andrews University Awarded American College of Sports Medicine Gold Level Status, Emphasizing the Importance of Physical Activity.  As of February 2016, Andrews University is listed as a registered institution with the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Exercise is Medicine® on Campus (EIM-OC) initiative. Andrews was awarded Gold Level status, recognizing the university’s dedication to campus-wide physical activites. ACSM “is the highest governing body for exercise and fitness in the world. Its health initiative, Exercise is Medicine® on Campus, is a program aimed at colleges and universities around the world to encourage and promote physical activity among students, faculty and staff.” As Andrews University puts great emphasis on the importance of exercise and healthful living, it is now the first private institution to be given this recognition.
