Southern Adventist University Hosts Historian Eric Anderson to Speak for Inaugural McArthur Lecture

Southern Adventist University’s honors program, Southern Scholars, is pleased to welcome historian Eric Anderson, PhD, as presenter for the first Benjamin McArthur Endowed Lecture. All are invited to the free talk on April 13 at 7 p.m. in Ackerman Auditorium on the second floor of Mabel Wood Hall as Anderson explores how society approaches an imperfect past and flawed heroes. His presentation is titled "Smashing Icons: Reflections on Thomas Jefferson and Others."

This new lecture series honors the late Southern professor Benjamin McArthur, PhD, who taught in the History and Political Studies Department for 35 years. These annual lectures will address topics that McArthur cared deeply about: the life of the mind, service to community, and spiritual commitment. Anderson’s lecture also will serve as the keynote address for the Association of Seventh-day Adventist Historians, who are meeting on the university campus.

Anderson, a personal friend of the McArthur family, holds a doctorate in history from the University of Chicago. In addition to 30 years of teaching and administration in higher education, Anderson has been a Fulbright lecturer in Greece and a program officer at the National Endowment for the Humanities.
