Martin Doblmeier on His New Film “SABBATH” at Faith & Reason Sabbath School
(10:00 a.m. eastern / 9:00 a.m. central / 7:00 a.m. Pacific)
This Sabbath, filmmaker Martin Doblmeier and former Spectrum editor Bonnie Dwyer talk together about Martin’s new film, SABBATH, which airs on PBS in a couple of weeks. Martin’s award-winning films are well known to many of us, notably his The Power of Forgiveness and his profiles of Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Abraham Heschel. Given Doblmeier’s nuanced eye, no surprise he's chosen to profile how the practice and experience of Sabbath responds to our current exhaustion and thirst for rest and peace. While SABBATH features some of our class presenters, including Sigve Tonstad and Richard Rice, the film surprises us with the breadth of ways that other faith traditions—Sabbath agriculture, tech Sabbaths, Trappist Sabbaths—practice Sabbath. Sabbath is special, of course, to Adventists, but we should find comfort that we do not celebrate sacred time alone.
