Kendra Haloviak Valentine: “Cleopatra & the Great Whore of Babylon” at CZSS
(9:30 a.m. Pacific / 11:30 a.m. central / 12:30 p.m. eastern)
Kendra Haloviak Valentine will present “Cleopatra & the Great Whore of Babylon” for the Choir Zoom Sabbath School at Pacific Union College on Saturday, October 28.
What is behind the idea of a “great whore” in the book of Revelation—especially since first century prostitutes were anything but “great” or powerful and instead the most destitute of slaves in the Roman Empire? In addition to his prophetic literary tradition and contemporary coinage, was John the Revelator’s most persuasive rhetorical allusion to the “great whore” Cleopatra?
Kendra Haloviak Valentine, PhD, is professor of New Testament studies at La Sierra University in Riverside, California. She has taught at Adventist universities in the United States and Australia. In addition to many journal publications, her books Signs to Life (2013) and Worlds at War, Nations in Song (2015) focus on biblical interpretation.
