CZSS Jan. 20: Butler and Wibberding on Ellen White’s Future

This Sabbath, January 20, 2024 at the Choir Zoom Sabbath School, Jonathan Butler and Laura Wibberding will provide a report on a scholarly conference on Ellen G. White.

Last October twenty scholars who have studied, taught, and written about Ellen White met on the Pacific Union College campus to discuss White’s future among Adventists. All of them recognize that critical scholarship on the Adventist prophet since the 1970s has lessened confidence in her and reduced her influence within Adventism. They asked themselves how a more realistic view of Ellen White today can still play a meaningful role in the spiritual lives of Adventists.

Wibberding and Butler will report on the conference—the presentations made, the group discussions, the informal talks between sessions—and hope to draw the class into the same issues that occupied the conference.

Jonathan Butler, PhD, studied American church history at the University of Chicago and has produced a number of historical studies on Ellen White and Seventh-day Adventists.

Laura Ochs Wibberding is Assistant Professor of History and Theology at Pacific Union College. She is currently serving as interim Chair of the history department.

Join the meeting, starting at 10:00 A.M. PST via Zoom:
