CZSS Aug. 31: Gaza of the 8th Century BCE and Gaza Over the Past Year

The Choir Zoom Sabbath School meets this Saturday, August 31 from 9:30 – 10:45 AM, Pacific Time.

Douglas Clark’s presentation will focus on Gaza from two perspectives: 1) that of the 8th-century BC prophet Amos and his reference to Gaza in his rousing sermon to ancient Israel in Chapters 1 and 2, “re-versed” in today’s context; and 2) Gaza/Israel over the last year and how the past century has shaped, massaged, and nourished an international moral failure in southwestern Palestine.

Dr. Douglas Clark, partially retired and living on the Olympic Peninsula, continues to serve as Director of the Center for Near Eastern Archaeology at La Sierra University which, with a dedicated support team, he established in 2012. He also co-directs the Madaba Plains Project at Tall al-`Umayri, Jordan (in research and publication phases), where he has worked since the project’s inception in 1984. He first excavated in 1973 at Tall Hisban, also part of the Madaba Plains Project. Since 2015, along with colleagues from the US, Italy, and Jordan, he has been co-director of a multi-year project of establishing the Madaba Regional Archaeological Museum in Madaba, Jordan. He completed his Ph.D. in Hebrew Bible at Vanderbilt University, and has taught at Southwestern Adventist University, Walla Walla University, and La Sierra University, having also held administrative positions at several institutions. He has authored, edited, or co-edited eighteen volumes and 200+ articles, and has made 200+ presentations worldwide.
