CZSS April 13: “The Minister and the Mother Wound”

This Satruday, April 13, Mathilde Frey will present at the Choir Zoom Sabbath School “The Minister and the Mother Wound: Exploring the Intersection of Trauma & Gender in Jeremiah 13 & 31.”

Reading these two texts in conversation with each other highlights the crisis and exposes the traumatic experiences of both Jeremiah and Rachel—the naked prophet/priest and the grieving mother. The religious system that undermines transparency and accountability continues to violate women and others on the margins and thereby injures its entire community. The violated carry their suffering in their bodies for centuries to come. Reading through the lens of trauma challenges established hermeneutical frameworks and dares the theologian to engage in the enterprise of meaning-making and remaking in the face of recurring manifestations of the haunting event.

Dr. Frey is Professor of Biblical Studies in the School of Theology at Walla Walla University. Before joining the faculty at WWU in 2016, Mathilde taught at the Adventist International Institute of Advanced Studies (AIIAS) in the Philippines. She earned her Ph.D. in Old Testament at Andrews University.
