Brazil contains the most Seventh-day Adventists of any country in the world. Its members make up more than half of the 2 million members, and over 10 thousand churches, that constitute the South American Division. Brazil has five Adventist institutions of higher education, an influential media company, and a culture of strict loyalty to leadership.
However, it is a heavily hierarchical Church that has historically lacked transparency and accountability to its wider membership, with often troubling results in the political, financial, and ecclesiological realms. In order to better understand the future faced by Adventists in Brazil, we will discuss our reporting on the financial irregularities found at Adventist Risk Management-South America, and the crisis that affected the young members of the New Seed church, as well as the dynamics of Pathfinders, and how the Church treats LGBTQ people.
André Kanasiro is a lifelong Brazilian Adventist, and former Pathfinder, who is editor-in-chief and creator of Zelota magazine, an independent journal and collective that seeks to foster critical discussions of Adventism and Christianity in Brazil. Kanasiro writes on the Bible, politics, and Adventism, and has reported on multiple controversies in the Brazilian Church. He is a biologist and has a master’s degree in Jewish Studies from the University of São Paulo.
