Columbia Union College changes name to Washington Adventist University

Columbia Union College has officially announced it is changing its name to Washington Adventist University.

Wow! It is with great excitement that I welcome you to your new institution—Washington Adventist University. Today, in a strong majority vote, the CUC Midterm Constituency approved this name and it’s acronym, WAU (pronounced “wow”), to move us into the final phase of the university transition. As a follow up to this important vote, the Constituency also took the appropriate action to change the name of the corporation and all mentions of the institution’s name in the By-Laws of the Constituency.

We can begin operating as Washington Adventist University as soon as this name is approved by the appropriate legal entities, including the state of Maryland and the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

I would like to thank the work of our internal taskforce on university status, chaired by Dr. Gina Brown, for doing their due diligence in gathering all name suggestions and winnowing the list for the Board of Trustees.

As I observed our constituents today—in a discussion where passion was obvious but congeniality and respect ruled the day—I was once again convicted that God is leading our institution to do great things for His kingdom.

As we continue to make this an institution of excellence, preparing graduates who bring competence and moral leadership to their communities, let us all remember—This IS Washington Adventist University!
