Book Club Selection: Prayer

Just a reminder that this month’s book club selection is Prayer by Philip Yancey. In his typically honest voice as a fellow pilgrim, Yancey subtitles the book with the provocative question, “Does it make any difference?” Here’s a short summary:

Philip Yancey probes the very heartbeat—the most fundamental, challenging, perplexing, and deeply rewarding aspect—of our relationship with God: prayer. What is prayer? Does it change God’s mind or ours—or both? This book is an invitation to communicate with God the Father who invites us into an eternal partnership through prayer.

The discussion, led by Shasta Nelson and myself will start on May 1st. We’re looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this book.

Some time ago I was sitting in what quite possibly was the most boring church service I have ever been in. (No, I won’t tell you where I was.) There couldn’t have been more than 50 people in the sanctuary, and I’m being generous. We sang no less than 5 hymns. All hymns were sung in a dry, slow manner. The sermon seemed uninspired, barely prepared, and was presented with no sense of conviction. It felt like we were in church for three hours. We were in church for about 70 minutes.
