Campus Headlines: Andrews University’s Wandile Mthiyane Wins Social Business Competition (And More!)

Andrews Student Wandile Mthiyane Wins Social Business Competition. Wandile Mthiyane, an Andrews University architecture student, is an ambassador of One Young World, a global forum for young leaders aged 18-30 who with guidance from global leaders work to address the world's most pressing issues. In November, Mthiyane developed and presented a project for poor communities in his native South Africa called the “half-house.” Mthiyane's half-house project partners with residents of shanty towns and provides half of the budgeting, plumbing, building, designing and landscaping needed to build new homes. The project won first place in a Bangkok, Thailand One Young World summit social business competition. Read more here.

Oakwood University Students Receive Scholarships to Study in China. Seven Oakwood University students have been named recipients of the HBUC-China scholarships. They will spend six weeks in a summer program with an environmental scientist mentor from Nanjing Forestry University and will receive lectures in Mandarin, Chinese culture and history, statistics and will gain hands-on experience in a laboratory or field setting. High School Students Compete for Music Scholarships at La Sierra University. La Sierra’s Department of Music held its 5th annual Promising Young Artist Scholarship Competition. From ten high school students who signed up, seven advanced to the performance portion of the competition. Four winners were selected from the group, each awarded a $2,000 scholarship to attend La Sierra and a $150 cash prize. Pianist Thomas Kim from Chino Hills High School won first place. Loma Linda University Discusses Zika Virus. Amid fears over the spread of the Zika virus, Loma Linda University Health in partnership with World Affairs Council of Inland Southern California held an event to address questions about the virus on World Health Day, April 7. "With nearly 70 individuals in attendance, questions ranged from how to respond to those who fear travel due to these diseases to how to ensure the safety of loved ones living in infected areas for extended periods of time,” Loma Linda reported. Walla Walla University Students Race Through Europe in Worldwide Competition. Walla Walla University students, Chad Torkelson, Sheldon Maxwell and Tyler MacPhee, are in Europe, competing in the “Red Bull Can You Make It?” Challenge. Competitors use Red Bull energy drinks as currency to get from one destination to the next, ending in Paris, France. Their team, Team Seymour, has been consistently among the top 10 of 165 student teams from around the world. One of the main reasons they have been doing so well is because of their social media support team of family, friends, and classmates. More here. 

Pacific Union College Hosts Adventist Intercollegiate Association. Pacific Union College welcomed the student association officers from 10 other Adventist colleges to its campus on March 30. Nearly 150 students and sponsors were at the convention. “Collectively referred to as the Adventist Intercollegiate Association (AIA), the organization gathers each year on the campus of a different Adventist college or university for several days of reflection, worship and community, and professional development planned by the host school.” Read more here.
