3. Inter-American Division Crowns Bible Boom Winner

Victor Manuel Jaimes of the South Colombia church region was the winner of this year’s Inter-America Bible Boom. Jaimes, the first Bible Boom winner from south Colombia, finished the final round with 180 points. The final took place today at Mt. Dor Seventh-day Adventist Church in Champ Fleurs, Trinidad. . . All 22 Bible Boom competitors answered questions on the books of Romans, 1st and 2nd Corinthians, and Galatians in front of a live audience of more than 300. The event was streamed live over the internet in English, Spanish and French. . . Jaimes, 25, received a US$4,000 scholarship to the University of Southern Caribbean (USC) in Trinidad, an iPad and a first place award medal. Jaimes also becomes Inter-America’s Youth Embassador in charge of promoting the Bible and youth ministries throughout the Inter-American Division territory.

Rather, he appears to be making a stab at becoming a better person and some version of a responsible adult. The story of worldly dissatisfaction and sudden spiritual revelation he relates on the video is not out of the ordinary. And his malaise, if not necessarily his response to it, seems typical enough for a 19-year-old — an age susceptible to outsized attacks of seriousness, elation, frustration, boredom and despair. It’s not for nothing that Shakespeare made Hamlet a college student.

Some time ago I was sitting in what quite possibly was the most boring church service I have ever been in. (No, I won’t tell you where I was.) There couldn’t have been more than 50 people in the sanctuary, and I’m being generous. We sang no less than 5 hymns. All hymns were sung in a dry, slow manner. The sermon seemed uninspired, barely prepared, and was presented with no sense of conviction. It felt like we were in church for three hours. We were in church for about 70 minutes.
