Some days you open up the mail and just cringe—especially if you care about the image of Seventh-day Adventism.

I love my Seventh-day Adventist community and I love my civic community. So, it’s painful to see my local church so unaware of how to connect with the cosmopolitan people around them and the new century in which they live.

What a waste of this church’s money and the donated time of the dedicated members who will show up once again hoping that a few random residents will show up to get unlocked. Just in case anyone thought that Seventh-day Adventism was changing too quickly. . .

Some time ago I was sitting in what quite possibly was the most boring church service I have ever been in. (No, I won’t tell you where I was.) There couldn’t have been more than 50 people in the sanctuary, and I’m being generous. We sang no less than 5 hymns. All hymns were sung in a dry, slow manner. The sermon seemed uninspired, barely prepared, and was presented with no sense of conviction. It felt like we were in church for three hours. We were in church for about 70 minutes.
