Adventist Archives on Twitter

In an Adventist world of opinions, its good to find a remnant who value the testimony of facts. The Office of Archives and Statistics at the world headquarters of the Seventh-day Adventist Church has been employing a variety of new media strategies to share information about Adventism.

Toward that end, the Adventist Archives Twitter account—@GCarchives—emits a steady stream of interesting facts about Seventh-day Adventism. Check out some recent tweets below.

  • In 2010, one new church was organised every 4.5 hours!
  • Jamaica, with a population of 2.8 million, has 250,000 Seventh-day Adventists—a ratio of almost 1 in 10.
  • An encouraging statistic: an average of over 1 million people were baptised as each year in the last quinquennium.
  • A sobering statistic: in the 2000s, 1 out of every 5 Adventists has left the church.
  • Did you know…? SDAs first passed the 1 million mark globally in 1955; at the end of that year, there were 1,006,218 Adventists.
  • Did you know? The GC Archives contains transcripts of US army courts martial proceedings, against SDA soldiers who wouldn’t break Sabbath.
  • Did you know…? In the 1890s, had 30 “City Missions” in 4 nations, ministering to unemployed workingmen, orphans and the poor.
  • Adventists re-fought the early church’s battles over the Trinity. Today is a good day to remember the Adventist Athanasius: W. W. Prescott.
  • Did you know…? A pioneer of peanut butter was an SDA, Joseph Lambert who in the 1890s made a mill that reduced nuts “to a pulp or butter”.
  • May 1 in history: in R&H in 1888 Uriah Smith denounces the vast sums of money spent on military preparations by “civilized” nations.
  • The Seventh-day Adventist Church is the only Protestant church that’s in virtually every country in the world.
