Creations—Southern Discomfort
One of the fantastic characteristics of art is inspiring conversation and controversy. The three short films featured this week hold rich material for long conversations. Not only are each of these pieces well-crafted, they each have elements that make me profoundly uncomfortable. I suspect that some elements will make you uncomfortable too, though perhaps for different reasons. Full disclosure: two of these pieces are created by Southern Adventist University film students, my alma mater.
First, we have a piece (above) about Brittany, a young woman with Dissociative Identity Disorder (D.I.D), by filmmaker Tim Banks. Next an animated video for the band Gungor’s song “God Is Not a White Man.”
Finally, we have Crystal Case’s Dangerous Conviction, a film about martyrdom in Soviet Russia.
What makes you uncomfortable in each of these films and why?
