Committed Wins: Adventists Sweep NBC’s “Sing-Off” Competition

In an exciting season finale of NBC’s The Sing-Off, Huntsville a cappella sextet, Committed out-sang three other groups to win season two. The victory for the group means that Seventh-day Adventist singers have swept the contest since its 2009 debut. Like the Committed six who all have ties to Oakwood University, season one winners, Nota, who hail from Puerto Rico, also originated in Adventist schools.
Winning brings Committed $100,000 in prize money and a Sony Music record deal.
In the show’s final episode, the show’s host and judges also participated in musical numbers. Nick Lachey of 98 Degrees sang along with Sheryl Crow, Neil Diamond, Sarah Bareilles and show judges Ben Folds, Nicole Scherzinger and Shawn Stockman in the finale. Stockman and Boyz II Men sang Motownphilly with Committed, and Committed and Street Corner Symphony joined Neil Diamond in singing “Ain’t No Sunshine” and Jerry Lawson & Talk of the Town performed “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.”
According to Alabama-based news outlet al.com, it was another sextet from Oakwood, Take 6, that turned NBC on to Committed’s talent.

The group was discovered by NBC after a recommendation from Take 6, another accomplished a cappella group from Oakwood. Committed played at a party honoring Take 6 and made a favorable impression. When NBC was seeking groups for the show’s second season, Take 6 made the winning recommendation.

The final outcome of The Sing-Off was determined by voters, who weighed in by phone, text or web. Once the results were finalized, messages of congratulations began pouring in on Facebook and Twitter. A comment that typifies the Twitter adulations comes from cufan09: “@committed6 Congratulations on winning The Sing-Off. You were our favorite from the beginning.” PHSChoirTeach (Mrs. Tabor) tweets, “…Congratulations to Committed for a great set of performances on The Sing Off!
Others, however, were disappointed with the outcome. Twitter user nosajn121 said, “…I wanted ‘Street Corner Symphony’ to Win the Sing-Off!!! uhhh…Congrats ‘Commited’……Still Sad….”
