SONscreen Film Festival comes to Atlanta

The SONscreen Film Festival met this year concurrently with the 59th General Conference Session in Atlanta, Georgia in the beautiful Rialto Performing Arts Center.

SONscreen is in it’s 8th year. Every year more and more talented young filmmakers bring their creations to this festival. I had lunch with two such young artists today and was impressed with their maturity and commitment to their craft.

The festival culminated last night with the final screenings and award presentations. This year there were two prizes: Best in Festival and Best Illustration of God’s Grace (in keeping with the theme of General Conference). This year’s winners were:

Jonathan Dulan High School Collegiate Scholarship Award

Open Table Documentary, by Daniel Wahlen, Rio Lindo Adventist Academy

Best Illustration of God’s Grace

Washed Away, by Leif Ramsey of Southern Adventist University

Best in Festival

The Prodigal, by Jeremy Rowland of Southern Adventist University

Audience Choice Award

To be announced Thursday, July 1

The final event of this year’s SONscreen happens on Thursday, July 1 at the Rialto Performing Arts Center where there will be a special screening of all three Stained Glass documentaries. These three films are honest and inspiring stories of there Adventist congregations. You can learn more about Stained Glass at www.stainedglassfilms.org.

The SONscreen Film Festival exists to encourage and mentor young artists in the craft of film making. “This is the venue for young people to showcase their work and for the church to send the message that their artistic work is vitally important,” said Melody George, festival programmer. This year’s festival brought many audience members that have never been to a SONscreen Film Festival before or even knew of it’s existence. According to the organizers of this event, this was one of the key highlights this year.

The festival owes its existence to many people, including Stacia Dulan-Wright the Co-founder and Producer, and visionary leaders at the North American Division such as Dave Gemmell and Dan Day.
