Video: PUC Student Drains Clutch Shot for Playoff Spot

In a basketball shot that will be long remembered by PUC, Josh Jewett swished a shot from six feet beyond half court into the court of Holy Names University (meaning it was more than a half court shot) to help PUC gain a playoff spot in CalPac next week.

The game was crucial for PUC being able to play in the playoffs. Holy Names led by 7 points at halftime but PUC came back and built a small lead but then the teams traded points through the remainder of the game. Holy Names had a chance to win in regulation but with PUC’s tough defense were unable to do so sending the game into overtime with several hundred PUC students and fans cheering and waiting with nervousness. The sportsmanship was very good throughout the game with tough play on both sides. Holy Names had another chance to win but the shot clock ran out leaving PUC with 3.6 seconds of play in overtime. Most of us anticipated a second overtime but none of us should give up hope. Perhaps this is a lesson for other areas of campus.

You have to go to PUC’s web site to see what happened because this is one of those shots you see on national television sports programs given the importance of the game and almost impossibility of doing what Josh accomplished with barely a second left which would have sent the game into a second overtime. Coach Castillo tells me that Josh regularly practices half court shots but this one defies description.

Some time ago I was sitting in what quite possibly was the most boring church service I have ever been in. (No, I won’t tell you where I was.) There couldn’t have been more than 50 people in the sanctuary, and I’m being generous. We sang no less than 5 hymns. All hymns were sung in a dry, slow manner. The sermon seemed uninspired, barely prepared, and was presented with no sense of conviction. It felt like we were in church for three hours. We were in church for about 70 minutes.
