What’s Next? The New Agenda and the New Team

As the 60th General Conference Session in San Antonio came to a close, re-elected President Ted N. C. Wilson began to speak of what he envisions for the next five years. His three stated goals are: (1) Emphasizing Christ and His righteousness, (2) faithfulness, and (3) involvement of every church member in evangelism and witness. What activities will be initiated to fulfill the goals remains to be seen, but there were some early clues.

Outside the Alamo 5: Surprise, Surprise

The recently concluded General Conference 2015 Session in San Antonio produced voteloads of random surprises.

Not that all of them literally astonished.

The Preaching: Heaven Still on Our Minds (Earth Not So Much)

Heaven is your ultimate home.

Jesus transforms your mood and spirit, even your face.

One thing matters and that is crossing the (“figurative”) Jordan, making the journey—very soon—to heaven.

So said three preachers over the week, the last one Ted Wilson, now eight days into his second term as General Conference president.  The General Conference session was turning toward its finish.  Heaven was still closer to consciousness than the earth God created and blessed at the beginning.

#GCFashion: A Celebration of Diversity

Last Sabbath, July 4, General Conference Session 2015 attendees flooded into the Alamodome and Convention Center dressed in traditional attire from their home countries. To celebrate this beautiful display of the diversity present in the Seventh-day Adventist church, we took to Twitter with #GCFashion. Here is a roundup of the best of the best from last week.

Outside the Alamo 4: After the Vote – Practicing the Fundamentals

“I don’t care about the 28 fundamentals,” my young adult close friend confided, “as much as I care about how my church treats people.”

Adventist Fundamental Beliefs often appear like the apparition of Jacob Marley, rattling chains and wagging a bony finger. Our beliefs ought to be more like Jesus of Nazareth, arms wide open in a meadow filled with waving sunflowers, beckoning our embrace. At their core, Adventist beliefs should be liberating.

A few years ago, our son, Geoffrey Nelson-Blake, wrote the following:

Clarification of Roles on Women in Ministry

General Conference President Elder Ted Wilson has requested that each division president of the 13 world regions, clarify the meaning of the vote taken on Wednesday, July 8, 2015.

North American Division (NAD) President Daniel Jackson would like to make the following statement:

Firstly, we want to acknowledge that we will comply with the vote of the world church.

Secondly, the vote prohibited the 13 world divisions of the church from making their own decisions regarding the consideration and potential implementation of women’s ordination to the gospel ministry. .

Midweek Preaching: Evangelizing a Doomed World

Through the weekdays at the General Conference session, one preacher a day stands at the podium.  One of these sessions is like camp meeting—old friends, sweaty weather, crowds like rivers—yet it’s not camp meeting.  Church business is the main course; music and homily are side dishes.

Adventist Church in the Netherlands Unchanged by Ordination Vote

Following the discussion and vote on ordination at the General Conference Session in San Antonio, Texas on Wednesday, July 9 in which the Worldwide Seventh-day Adventist Church decided to pursue its current course on the ordination of women, the Adventist Church in the Netherlands has issued the following statement:

General Conference Delegates Discuss Women's Ordination

Four General Conference Session delegates—from Southern Africa-Indian Ocean Division, Trans-European Division, and the North American Division—talk about the vote to allow divisions to make provision for the ordination of women.

This short video from Spectrum Media provides candid thoughts on this Session's most controversial subject.
