The Fourth Chair

Every year or so, my two best friends and I get together for a long weekend of “just the guys.” We live in different states so it is a challenge to coordinate our schedules, family responsibilities and jobs to make it happen.  More than once we’ve had to cancel due to last minute issues that crept up.  Our gatherings so far have taken us to Washington State, Utah, and Colorado.

On the occasion of the International Human Rights Day on December 10, the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Switzerland published a movie clip on religious freedom in six languages. Using religious freedom as an example it focuses on the universality of human rights. It was produced by young Adventists who are engaged in the film business either full or part time.

Highland View Academy Chaplain Dismissed Over Same-Sex Wedding

On September 13 at the Whatcom Museum in Bellingham, Washington, two young ladies, Rande McDaniel and Britney Moss, joined in marriage under the state’s recently-enacted same-sex marriage bill. The occasion was an intimate dinner in a modern, minimalistic event room with some forty to fifty close friends and family members. After a catered meal and stories about the couple, Rande and Britney exchanged vows.

Weep & Worship: A Conclusion

God is dead. God remains dead.

These words that fueled a jarring theological movement have burned and etched a confusing and painful scar on the face of Christian theology; it brings with it connotations of flux and fear, shame and guilt, emptiness and hopelessness.

What Is White Supremacy? Part 2 of 2

This is the second article in a two-part series. Read part one here.

I usually avoid using the word “racism,” even if modified by the adjective “white.” This phrase obscures our situation, because it treats racism as one thing and whiteness as another, as though there is generic racism, which can simply be attributed to white or other people. This is assumed whenever someone speaks of “reverse racism” or “reverse discrimination.” It is assumed that genuine role reversal is possible. But this is a mistaken assumption.

What Is White Supremacy? Part 1 of 2

This is the first article in a two-part series. Read part two here.

I have never met a white person who freely admitted to being a white supremacist, and rarely will a white person identify someone who is a white supremacist (except maybe Rush Limbaugh or Glenn Beck).

Bringing the Real World to Genesis: Age Dating of Rocks

The history of human attempts to measure time is a fascinating story that starts with the only tools primitive people had, namely the seasons and cosmology (e.g., the sun day-and night-cycles, and moon phases and cycles). Attempts to measure time later became more sophisticated with the invention of formal calendars, sundials and mechanical clocks.

Most people recognize that all these devices have limitations and have the capacity to provide inaccurate information, but no one seriously questions the reliability and usefulness of them in providing a practical measure of time.

Passing Our Thanks On

Today is a day for giving thanks. Americans celebrate Thanksgiving the fourth Thursday of every November (Canadians in October), but it’s a good reminder that all of us, no matter where we live, have a lot to be thankful for. We offer thanks for the many blessings we have been given. We can also thank the people in our lives who have helped us in ways big and small, and had a hand in making us the people we are.

Pope Francis’ Message to the SDA Church

The pontificate of Pope Francis has been nothing short of surprising. Coming after years of the highbrow and intellectual mannerisms of Benedict XVI, Francis is winning hearts and minds across the globe by insisting the church come down from its pedestal and engage humanity. In recent photos, Francis is seen hugging two disfigured men. Those pictures have gone viral. People are asking: Is he the “reincarnation” of Pope John Paul II?

In a statement today, Tuesday Nov 26 2013, Francis said:
