No Fall Classes at Atlantic Union College

A Massachusetts paper is reporting that Atlantic Union College will not be offering classes this fall.

No classes will be held this fall at Atlantic Union College while a Maryland university seeks permission to operate on the South Lancaster campus.

Washington Adventist University is looking to fill the void left when Atlantic Union College loses its accreditation at the end of this month by establishing a branch campus in town.Last year the New England Association of Schools and Colleges voted to remove the accreditation of local Seventh-day Adventist college, citing a lack of money or means of fundraising.

The Maryland university, in Takoma Park, is awaiting permission from the state Department of Education to open a satellite campus on the grounds of Atlantic Union College. But the state has yet to grant permission. Until permission is received, students from Atlantic Union may attend classes in Maryland to ensure their college careers are notinterrupted.

According to a July 14 press release from Atlantic Union College:

Current and prospective students from Atlantic Union College (AUC) in South Lancaster, Mass., are being notified of a transition plan that will enable them to attend Washington Adventist University (WAU) at the Takoma Park, Md., campus for the fall 2011 semester. . . .

Washington Adventist University will begin educational activities in South Lancaster when the permission to operate in Massachusetts is granted by their Department of
Higher Education. “We’re working through the process and are optimistic that we’ll be able to operate soon after permission is granted by the commonwealth. Moving this process forward keeps our commitment to serve the educational needs of students in 15 states in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast United States and the islands of Bermuda,” said Weymouth Spence, EdD, president of WAU.
