Introducing the Spectrum Online Book & Film Club

Mark Twain once said, “Good friends, good books and a sleepy conscience: this is the ideal life.” While the sleepy conscience bit is a tad hedonistic for good Pathfinders, we are going to take his advice on good books and friends! As part of our continued commitment to community through conversation, we’re launching the Spectrum Online Book & Film Club.

I’ve gone through our past blog posts about favorite books and films and solicited suggestions from many of you to find the specific titles and themes that seemed to most interest us, trying to find a balance between current and classic, devotional and scholarly, Adventist and beyond. Here’s the list of books and films for our first twelve months. (We’ll continue to do book and film reviews in between club selections, so keep sending along your ideas for other good titles you'd like to see reviewed on the site.)

All of the film titles are available on DVD for purchase or rental. Please consider supporting Spectrum’s online efforts by purchasing books and films through our Amazon affiliate account (just use the links or Amazon search box below).

You'll notice that the book & film club discussions will start on the last Thursday of every month. If any of you want to volunteer to help facilitate a discussion on a book or film you're particularly fond of, let me know. Happy reading & viewing!

Looking forward to some great conversations,

Daneen,
This is very cool. I'm excited!
Thank you and your reviews team for all of your hard work!

What a great idea, Daneen! I've already read several of the books others mentioned. I'm also glad I've read six of the 12 books you have listed and seen two of the films, so I have a head start! Really looking forward to the discussions.

The films and books (some of which I have seen and read, but would so much enjoy "experiencing" with a group) are a great selection. Also, an project like this builds greater community and involvement. (I wonder what our churches would be like if we had events like these...)

Great idea!

I am indeed hoping this helps build greater community and involvement, and I hope many of the titles are familiar--most of these titles have been suggested in past conversations on this and the old blog. In my personal spiritual journey, a book club (whose members are still very dear to me) once served as my church family for quite a while during a time when I wasn't involved actively in Adventism or even Christianity. Reading/viewing and talking together can be very powerful.

The idea is to have a facilitator who writes a short review and then helps lead in the discussion. If any of you dear readers see a title you especially are passionate about, drop me a note.

Great idea Daneen. I'm looking forward to the discussions.
