The Convenience of Compassion

Earlier this year in June, in my home town of London, a tragedy occurred for which the current death toll stands at 80 people, but the reality is that many more are still missing. The tragedy I am speaking of is the Grenfell Tower fire.

Salt

Salt.

It gives flavor to food and, in small quantities, is essential to life. But salt can also be abrasive; it can poison and kill, and if poured onto an open wound can cause excruciating pain. And yet, this is what Christ chose to call us in Matthew 5:13.

“You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless.” (NLT)

The Watchful Manager

Recent parallel and polarizing events in Europe and America have led to a rapid increase in urgency of claims that “We are in the last days!” and “Jesus is coming soon; we must get ready!”

Breaking News! Jesus has been coming soon for two thousand years; we should have been getting ready during that entire period, not just at the eleventh hour. That fact aside, what does "get ready" entail exactly? Travel insurance for our journey to Heaven? Some modest swimwear? Or maybe it is some form of doomsday preparation?
