Happy Birthday Ellen and Juli

Today is a very special day in my world because of two very special people—Ellen G. White and Juli Ling Miller.

You may be familiar with both of these incredible women, but if not I’ll tell you a little bit about them.

Adventist Society for Religious Studies Votes Support for 'Yes' Vote on GC Ordination Question

Members of the Adventist Society for Religious Studies meeting in San Diego, California voted today (Friday) to support a YES vote on the Women’s Ordination motion that will be considered at the 2015 General Conference Session.

The vote was constructed as a message to the delegates of the GC Session meeting in San Antonio, Texas, U.S., July, 2015. It read:

"We, the members of the Adventist Society for Religious Studies, wish to express our love for the church and our concern for its unity.

Annual Council Diary VI: Orchestrating the Session

There were some ah ha moments in the Annual Council deliberation on how to handle women’s ordination on Tuesday. One ah ha came early, during the morning devotional by Dr. Peter Landless as he described Jesus encounter with the woman at the well. “The woman proved to be a more effective missionary than Jesus’ disciples,” Landless said, and an audible ahhh rose from the audience.

Other ah ha’s have come to me in the hours since the meeting as I have thought and talked with others about what was and was not presented during this tightly scripted day.

Annual Council Diary V: Inspired Revisions

The house was packed for Mark Finley’s Monday morning devotional, and he preached with fervor describing the love that is at the heart of the Three Angels messages in Revelation. In closing he told the story of George Frederic Handel’s encounter with God while writing The Messiah. Handel said the heavens opened up for him as he penned the Hallelujah Chorus and he saw Jesus’ face.  Then Finley invited the audience to sing the one-word song Hallelujah with him. The day was off to an inspiring start.

Annual Council Diary IV: On to the Fundamentals

Numbers and words topped Sunday’s agenda during the first business sessions at Annual Council. But really it was all about people. As Division presidents introduced new Executive Committee members, the governing body welcomed the first delegate, a woman, from the Chinese Union Mission.

Annual Council Diary III: Faith, Love and Satan

Traditional Sabbath worship services are held in the General Conference Chapel during Annual Council.  Sabbath School began with Carol Barron, an enthusiastic  chorister, leading the audience in clapping and saying hallelujah as they sang “If you’re happy and you know it.”

Getting Personal: Annual Council Diary II

Annual Council Diary II

While the members of the General Conference Executive Committee have gathered to attend to church business at Annual Council, the meetings began with what could best be described as continuing education. Known as the Leadership Education and Development (LEAD) Conference, this year the sessions were very personal, beginning with the health talks on Thursday evening. Friday’s topic continued that personal slant as speakers, case studies and skits focused on appointments and disappointments.

And So It Begins: Annual Council Diary I

Annual Council Diary I

Every five years the Seventh-day Adventist church holds a General Conference session to elect officers, vote changes in the policies and practices of the church, and review beliefs and mission statements. The Annual Council session of the General Conference Executive Committee that vets all items for that meeting opened Thursday evening. Speculation about how the issue of women’s ordination will be handled has been swirling about since the completion of the Theology of Ordination Study Commission ended in a three-way divide over the issue.
