Adventist Church in Thailand in Years-Long Battle with Cult Leader

On July 5, the Bangkok Post published a report about the ongoing battle between the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Thailand and Lao Yang, a former Adventist turned cult leader who is facing charges on six counts of sexual abuse, including two against minors who filed earlier this month. 

Travel Agency Fraud Warning Issued by General Conference Office of General Counsel

On July 13, the GC Office of General Counsel issued a travel agency fraud warning to conferences, churches, universities, and schools after receiving multiple reports from entities that engaged Insouciance Abroad Travel Agency. This is the GC's second fraud warning regarding the company.

Registration Now Open for the 2017 Adventist Forum Conference

Registration is now open for the 2017 Adventist Forum annual conference, titled Celebrating the Word: A Biblical Feast. It will take place September 1-3 at the Marriott Portland Downtown Waterfront Hotel in Portland, Oregon.

Event speakers include Zane Yi, Kendra Haloviak Valentine, Alden Thompson, John McVay, John McDowell, Timothy Golden, and John Brunt.

Michigan Conference Bans George Knight’s Books from Its ABC Stores

A ban on Dr. George R. Knight’s books arrived swiftly and left just as quickly, leaving Michigan Adventist Book Center (ABC) customers confused, outraged, and a little dizzy.

On the afternoon of Thursday, July 6, social media posts started appearing on Facebook stating that Knight’s books had been pulled from Michigan ABC shelves at the decision of Michigan Conference President Jay Gallimore. The Michigan Conference controls the three ABC stores, located in Lansing, Battle Creek, and Berrien Springs.

Andrews University Announces New Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion

Andrews University has announced that Michael Nixon will serve as its first Vice President for Diversity & Inclusion. The creation of this position was announced in February as part of the University’s response to the #ItIsTimeAU video that made waves across social media.

Adventist University of Health Sciences' Provost to Succeed Founding President

In a press release on June 27, Adventist University of Health Sciences announced that current provost Dr. Edwin Hernández will replace Dr. David Greenlaw as president when Greenlaw retires on July 31. The press release is included in full below:

Adventist University of Health Sciences (ADU) Board of Trustees' has announced that Dr. Edwin Hernández, ADU's current provost and an educator with over 30 years of experience, will succeed Dr. David Greenlaw, ADU's founding president, upon his retirement on July 31st, 2017.

Adventist Health Systems Join Together to Create Bioethics Consortium

On June 16, Loma Linda University Health announced that as part of its continued commitment to ethical healthcare and education it has joined together with four other Adventist-affiliated health systems to create the Adventist Bioethics Consortium. It is coordinated by Gerald Winslow, PhD, director of Loma Linda University Center for Christian Bioethics, which was established in 1984.

Walla Walla General Hospital to Close After Transfer to Providence Health Halted

In a media release today, Adventist Health announced that plans to transfer membership of Walla Walla General Hospital to Providence Health & Services have been halted. The statement from Adventist Health’s media relations department follows:
