Three Angles News – Oakwood Wins $25,000 Grant

1. Oakwood University has won a $25,000 Campus Pride Grant in The Home Depot’s 2014 RETOOL YOUR SCHOOL contest. The win comes through a combination of social media activity and a voting score. Oakwood, one of three Historically Black Colleges/Universities to win $25,000 in the contest, plans to re-seed the softball and soccer fields and to install sprinkler systems with the funds.

2. Liberty Magazine and the Seventh-day Adventist Church recently sponsored (along with two other associations) the 12th annual Religious Liberty Dinner in Washington, DC – called the “best religious freedom party in town.” Melissa Rogers, special assistant to the president and executive director of the White House Office of Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships, gave the keynote address, and attendees included individuals from the diplomatic community, U.S. government and religious leaders of various faiths.

3. Eric Walsh, Public Health Director for the city of Pasadena, California, and also associate pastor of the Altadena SDA Church, has been placed on administrative leave and is being investigated after recordings of sermons (mostly before 2010) surfaced, in which Walsh seems to make homophobic and polarizing statements about gay people, Muslims and other groups.

Religion Can Be Fun

Some time ago I was sitting in what quite possibly was the most boring church service I have ever been in. (No, I won’t tell you where I was.) There couldn’t have been more than 50 people in the sanctuary, and I’m being generous. We sang no less than 5 hymns. All hymns were sung in a dry, slow manner. The sermon seemed uninspired, barely prepared, and was presented with no sense of conviction. It felt like we were in church for three hours. We were in church for about 70 minutes.
