If Farmers and Cowmen Can Do It…
I’m in the midst of reading Alden Thompson’s latest book, Beyond Common Ground: Why Liberals and Conservatives Need Each Other. I have often been troubled by the seeming hostility between liberals and conservatives on this blog, and as I was thinking about how we could overcome it, an old, familiar song from Oklahoma! came to mind
And I began putting some new words to it:
Oh, the Liberals and Conservatives should be friends!
The Liberal and Conservatives should be friends.
One group likes to prize the past; the other wants to modernize fast –
But that’s no reason why they can’t be friends.
Adventist folks should stick together;
Adventist folks should all be pals.
Conservatives marry Liberals’ daughters;
Liberals date Conservatives’ gals.
(Conservative): I’d like to say a word for Conservatives.
They’re firm and faithful to our Adventist roots.
(Liberal): They’re so firm they won’t tolerate any questions,
And don’t show love – one of the Spirit’s fruits!
Oh, the Liberals and Conservatives should be friends!
The Liberal and Conservatives should be friends.
One group likes to prize the past; the other wants to modernize fast –
But that’s no reason why they can’t be friends.
Adventist folks should stick together;
Adventist folks should all be pals.
Conservatives marry Liberals’ daughters’
Liberals date Conservatives’ gals.
(Liberal): The Liberals like to emphasize God’ grace,
And how Christ reached out to those who were outcast.
(Conservative): Conservatives believe we must show our faith
By turning away from sins in our past.
Oh, the Liberals and Conservatives should be friends!
The Liberal and Conservatives should be friends.
One group likes to prize the past; the other wants to modernize fast –
But that’s no reason why they can’t be friends.
Adventist folks should stick together;
Adventist folks should all be pals.
Conservatives marry Liberals’ daughters’
Liberals date Conservatives’ gals.
