Snapshot News of Adventists and Health

Healthcare was the debate (and shouting match) de jour in American this week. In light of the debate, it is interesting to read through news reports and see how Adventism appeared in health related news. Thus, here is a random snapshot of Adventists taking part in the healthcare debate or just taking care.

The San Bernardino Sun reports:

More than 75 area health care and civic leaders met at U.S. Rep. Joe Baca’s headquarters Thursday afternoon for a roundtable discussion on the House of Representatives proposal for health care.

Baca said he wanted to hear local concerns and dispel myths and rumors about the 900-plus page H.R. 3200, America’s Affordable Health Choices Act.

“Doing nothing is not the answer. Maintaining the status quo is not the answer,” Baca told the group in opening remarks of the meeting.

“When we look at 46 million people that are uninsured in the United States and we look at health costs now and into the future, it is important for us to address it,” Baca said.

Among those providing suggestions was Dr. Roger Hadley, dean of school of medicine at Loma Linda University.

Hadley said a limiting factor in providing needed physicians for the Inland Empire is the federal government’s cap on the number of residents a hospital can train.

Were the limits raised, more doctors would be settling in the area.

“Generally when someone graduates from medical school they are single. They are not likely to stay in the area (where they attended medical school). When they finish their residency they are married. The odds are they will stay,” he said.

Hadley said increasing the number of residents trained in this area will do more to boost the region’s supply of doctors than a new medical school.

Furthermore, at the Hollywood Seventh-day Adventist Church, this appeared on their front page.

This is a great opportunity for us to make a difference on this issue through being a part of LA Voice. Zach, has asked that we get there, this Tuesday 8/11/09, at 9:45 so the action will be ready to go at 10 a.m. This will be a media event so the more of us that are there the greater the impact will be. Please write if you have any questions and spread the word!

Reposted from LA Voice/PICO.

On Tuesday, August 11 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, LA Voice clergy along with faith leaders across the state and in cities across the country, are exercising their faith and hosting prayer rallies for the passage of national health care reform, expected to reach 100 Members of congress.

Will you stand with us as we ask Congressman Xavier Becerra to support the needs of thousands of families across the nation?

Amidst the noise of the national debate, it can be difficult to remember that this is about our health, and the health of families that are suffering from an inefficient system. Our elected officials are charged with listening to, and looking out for, the millions of everyday Americans who need the security of knowing that they and their families can afford to get the quality health care they need, when they need it.

We need your voices – those of everyday Americans to break through the noise.

This is not necessarily news, as these happen all over, and are a part of “Adventist health.” The San Joaquin Record writes:

The fourth annual Valley Community Resource and Health Fair is planned from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at Valley Community Seventh-day Adventist Church, 2929 S. B St., Stockton.

Festivities include a free vegetarian lunch, activities for the kids, hay rides, and games.

Health and resources includes blood-pressure checks, basic dental evaluation, diabetic testing and free supplies and much more.

Information will be available on domestic violence, youth and adult services and the transitional living program.

And the Contra Costa Times reports that the Loma Linda Farmer’s Market will be moving from Sunday to Wednesday.

“Sunday was a difficult day for us. We didn’t get a lot of the traffic that were hoping for,” said Phil Carlisle, interim chief executive officer of the Loma Linda Chamber of Commerce, which puts on the event.

The outdoor market is also changing locations. It will move from the frontage road just south of Barton Road to the Civic Center parking lot.

Stephanie Mahe, the chamber’s executive assistant, said Sunday was a bad day because many visitors who attended church in the morning didn’t have much time to go to the market before it closed.

Organizers thought Sunday would be a success because many residents are members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and celebrate the Sabbath on Saturday.

“For some reason, it didn’t draw well,” Mahe said. “We tried it. We had a lot of fun. It’s time for a new chapter to see if we can expand it on Wednesdays.”

The Inland Empire News writes that “The House of Representatives Thursday approved a Fiscal Year 2010 Defense Department spending bill that includes a number of Inland Empire-based research and development projects requested by Congressman Jerry Lewis.”

Lewis continued his support of research programs at Loma Linda University Medical Center, securing $8 million to continue cancer research programs sponsored by the Army at the Proton-Beam Treatment Center. The Neuroscience and Proton Institute at the university is studying the potential for treatment of people with serious behavioral conditions, especially veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder caused by intense combat situations. Another project would investigate new treatments for brain tumors that are resistant to current therapies. The programs are an extension of Congress’s mandate of “health care for life” for veterans and their families, Lewis said.

And here, a blogger writes about participating in the Malaysian Breastfeeding Week festivities at the Adventist Hospital in Penang.
