| Friday Film | “You brought two too many”

If you know that line, you know one of the best “spaghetti westerns” ever made. Once Upon a Time in the West (1968) — directed by Sergio Leone — it stars Henry Fonda, Jason Robards, Charles Bronson and Claudia Cardinale, with a haunting soundtrack by Ennio Morricone.

Sans the inane fast cuts of most contemporary film, Leone lets our eyes linger on landscape and faces, sometimes exposing more texture in the latter. Here is the opening scene, which sets up the moral ambiguity of the characters and the violence that cuts through an eternal dark west of the soul.
