Headlines: Thailand’s Royal Princess Confers Degrees on Asia-Pacific International University Grads

Thailand’s Royal Princess Hands Degrees to Grads at Adventist University. Her Royal Highness Princess Soamsawali presented certificates to successful candidates at Asia-Pacific International Adventist University in Muak Lek, Saraburi, Thailand for completing programs in Business, Accounting, Bioscience, Computer Information Systems, Education, Religious Education, Nursing, English, Master of Education and Master of Business Administration.  Princess Soamsawali has been present at every graduation ceremony for the last five years. This year’s graduation marked the largest graduating class, 276 students from 22 different nations, for the institution since its move to Thailand in 1999 from Singapore. General Conference Vice-president Ella Simmons gave the commencement address. Ebola Doctor Inspires WWU 2015 Grads.  James Appel, an LLU graduate who works in Chad as a missionary physician, gave the commencement address at Walla Walla University this year.  He shared his commitment to serving others even though it poses risks, including exposure to Ebola, to himself, his wife. and their children. Adventist Man Wins Religious Discrimination Suit. Sean Mohammed, a Seventh-day Adventist, won his wrongful-termination suit against his employer Mini Price Storage.  U.S. District Judge Raymond A. Jackson ruled that Mohammed was fired unfairly for not agreeing to work on Sabbath and awarded him $150,730 in back pay plus attorneys’ fees and court costs. Australian Woman Regrets Adventist Upbringing. Former Adventist Rochelle Siemienowicz’s has written a memoir titled Fallen, recounting her unhappy life as the child of an Australian Seventh-day Adventist pastor.  She rebelled against the beliefs she was raised with and eventually left the church. Union College Increases Scholarships by 50%.  Next year, Union College will renew each scholarship granted at 100 percent for four years in order to draw more students to its campus.  Until now, scholarships were renewed at 50 percent of the original scholarship value in subsequent years.  Union College developed the new system with a consultant. “President Vinita Sauder said the change brings Union in line with other private colleges across the country while also helping current and future students receive an Adventist education.” From Journal Star, “Union College to grant more scholarship aid to students.”

Parkview Adventist Medical Center Files for Bankruptcy. Parkview Adventist Medical Center in Brunswick, Maine filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.  According to the hospital’s news release, it will combine with Mid Coast Health Services, creating a new organization called Mid Coast – Parkview Health Syste,. preserving full- and part-time jobs.  “The Parkview campus will be used for physician practices, a walk-in clinic, as well as radiology, laboratory, ambulatory testing and surgery, oncology, hematology, infusion services, physical, occupational and speech therapy services and community health and wellness programs.” From WMTM News Channel 8, “Brunswick hospital files for bankruptcy.”
