Grand Larceny Charge for Adventist Ex-Treasurer.  Joaquim Canario, 74, the former treasurer of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Old Westbury, New York, was arrested and pleaded not guilty in a Nassau (New York) County Court to second-degree grand larceny.  He is accused of stealing over $350,000 from a church bank account between April 2008 and January 2012.  Canario may have been a victim of a scam offering him millions of dollars if he sent funds abroad, but he may have used church funds for other personal needs as well. From Newsday, “Ex-treasurer accused of stealing $360G from Seventh-day Adventist Church in Old Westbury.”

Strict Vegan Diet May Have Contributed to Infant’s Death. Jennifer and Jeromie Clark, strict vegans who had worshipped at the Central Seventh-day Adventist Church in northwest Calgary, Canada, have been charged with causing the death of their 14-month-old son. Tests, including an autopsy, revealed the child’s death was the result of a Staph infection complicated by malnutrition.  The Clarks have not been attending services at the church for the past eight years. From CTV News in Calgary, “Strict belief-based diet contributed to Calgary infant’s death, parents face charges.”

Muslim-Adventist cooperation Helps Students Reschedule Sabbath Exams. Muslim students allied with their Adventist classmates at an unnamed Albanian Adventist school, refusing to take the exams which were scheduled on Sabbath, risking their graduation. The Albanian government of the predominantly Muslim country relented and authorized final exams for ninth and 11th graders to be rescheduled.  The authorization came from the office of a deputy minister who had recently forced the Adventist school to remove the word “Christian” from its name. From the Inter-European Division, “Fruitful Muslim-Adventist cooperation.”
